Area Description
The town of Oviedo is located in the central part of Florida right outside of Orlando. This growing suburb has been known for its beautiful historic houses and buildings. This historical town, for the majority of its history, has been considered a rural suburb. This has changed in the past couple of decades as the population of the town has grown almost 27% since 2000. In addition, there are several new developments being constructed that support the growing economy. Until recently, the town of Oviedo was a small growing rural town that was slowly developed in the late 19th century. In the late 1870’s residents around Lake Jesup realized that they needed a convenient post office. Andrew Aulin decided to file the paperwork to build his own post office; this was the first building established in Oviedo. He named his new postal location the Oviedo Post Office to honor the Spanish heritage of the state. He decided to name the post office which inevitably became the name of the town after the capital of the Asturias Principality in northern Spain, Oviedo, which is also the home to the University of Oviedo. The town is relatively small, being only 15.4 square miles, but only 0.3 square miles of Oviedo is comprised of water. The drive from Oviedo to downtown Orlando is only 20 minutes, while also having convenient access to Lake Jesup, Lake Harney, and Lake Monroe up north of the town. The townspeople of Oviedo have a couple of rivers they can use that run through their city. One being the Econlockharchee River that goes through the east part of the city, and the other being the Little Econlockhatchee River which runs through the south part of the town.
