Area Description
Mobile is just 40 miles northeast of Pascagoula. It is a port city on Alabama’s Gulf Coast. The WWII-era USS Alabama battleship is anchored in Battleship Memorial Park. Floats, costumes and photos at the Mobile Carnival Museum illuminate the city’s centuries-old Mardi Gras tradition. The 1850 Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception features intricate German stained glass. International fine and decorative art is displayed at the Mobile Museum of Art. Pascagoula, one of Mississippi’s largest cities, is the County Seat of Jackson County. Though Pascagoula boasts grand Spanish moss-laden live oaks, splendid antebellum structures and charms of the old South, the city also has the breeziness, pleasant ambiance and architecture of a New England fishing village. While Pascagoula enjoys a comfortable coexistence with some mammoth industries, the city stubbornly maintains the quiet dignity, quality of life and tenacious preservation of natural beauty more characteristic of a rural community. Pascagoula is one of the largest shipbuilding and manufacturing centers on the east coast and is a robust, coastal market home to Ingalls Shipbuilding (12,500 employees), a leading producer of ships for the United States Navy, the largest manufacturing employer and second largest private employer in the state of Mississippi. Other major employers include Signet Maritime (5,550 employees), Chevron Oil (4,105 employees) and Singing River Hospital (2,500 employees). Recently, the U.S Navy announced Pascagoula as the contractor of a $746 Million contract to build the U.S Coast Guard polar icebreaker. This opportunity will provide Southern Mississippi with 900 new jobs. Construction will begin in 2021 and is expected to be completed in 2024.
