Main Street business owners have grumbled about some landowners in the area who have bought properties but not invested in them, leaving eyesores along the corridor in reconstruction limbo. And fixing those buildings up isn’t always easy.

Real estate broker Carrie Smith of Franklin Street said that bringing older buildings — especially vacant ones — back up to code costs a lot more.

“I hate to assume people bought properties and said, ‘this is my cost’ and then were totally blindsided,” she said. “If you’re buying a historical property, there’s lots of due diligence on the front end of that.”
